Harvesting Longlines with DRISHAC
Lerøy Ocean Harvest is the largest seaweed producer in Norway by far. It is owned by Lerøy Seafood Group, one of the largest fish farmers and fish processers in Norway, with over 2000 employees and exports to more than 80 countries. Lerøy Ocean Harvest has serious plans for scaling up seaweeed cultivation as part of their strategy to develop a more sustainable production model. The idea is to filter out nutrients from the ocean through seaweed farms, and put them back into circulation, which Blue Harvest Technologies is wholly engaged in.
The current production systems are simple floating frames with longlines tied across. This is easy to set up, but difficult to automate. This is what most other seaweed producers in Norway have been doing, and one of the prime motivations for us to start up Blue Harvest Technologies in the first place. While the Loop Farm and DRISHAC works great, it would be even better if you could use at least some of the automated processes of the system to operate longlines systems as well. This would make it a lot easier for farms that have already deployed longline systems to gradually phase them out and transition to Loop Farm.
In the spring of 2025 we successfully built and deployed a DRISHAC system on a vessel for Lerøy Ocean Harvest, and used it to harvest all their longline systems. It worked great, and proves that our system is backwards compatible with exisiting systems.
